Recommended server hardware for a busy vbulletin(s) and sites ?

By mike | January 6, 2009

  • I MAYBE lucky enough to be in the position to acquire whatever server configuration(s) i need for my sites (1 vbulletin + up to 10 - 15 web sites maybe even a 2nd vbulletin for a different site topic) - cost are not problem within reason of course :)

Based on these very optimistic stats :D, what would you recommend ?

10 - 15 web sites with an average of 3,000 unique visitors/day and 3 - 8 pageviews per unique visitor
    vbulletin with 2,500 - 5,000 visitors/day and 100 - 350 concurrent users - maybe even 2 vbulletins.

    Single server configuration
(where mysql database is on the same server):
what do you recommend, cpu, ram, hard drives ?

Web server + dedicated mysql server:
what do you recommend, cpu, ram, hard drives ?

My current dedicated linux server will be used for something else.

    just realised that is meant to say 3,000 unqiues/day for each of the 10 - 15 sites ~ 30,000 45,000 unqiues/day - optimistic :D probably only 1/5th of that but ...

You'll probably have to telnet into both machines from time to time for certain things, but you can have Webmin installed on both servers, and access them from one URL. There is an option in Webmin to register another server.

Hey I like the sound of that... I love spending other people's money ;)

    Here's what I would recommend:

    Single server configuration:
Linux, Pentium 700-900 (dual processors would be ideal), at least 512MB of RAM (again 1GB would be ideal), and dual SCSI disks, one for OS/Apache and the other for MySQL/databases.

Web server + dedicated mysql server:
Linux, Pentium 700s, 256-512MB RAM each, SCSI drives.

These are very general, but something along these lines should be good.

  • phew... so that's what the register other server feature is for :)

also what exactly are Raid disks ?

Basically, the goal of RAID (redunant array of inexpensive disks) is to save your data to multiple disks so that if one is damaged, you are still likely to be able to recover your data without having to go to a backup. However, with most things, there is a trade-off... in this case it's performance. Depending on how good the RAID array and configuration are, there might just be a tiny performance hit, or a huge one.

Here is an excellent resource to learn more about this: http://www.fast4gl.com/files/files/download.php?id=18

It covers Progress databases, but much of what is said can also apply to MySQL just as well.
